The Kutztown University Department of Electronic Media won two Crystal Pillar Awards at the Mid Atlantic regional Emmys Sept. 20 in Philadelphia, Pa. KU received four nominations from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) for the Crystal Pillar, the award given to colleges and universities. There are eight college and university production categories. KU swept the Live Sports Production category and received two nominations in the Arts and Entertainment category.

The Dean's Award for academic excellence is awarded to recipients with a 3.30 or higher grade-point average while enrolled in 3.75 or more course hours.

James Madison University is excited to welcome the class of 2018 to campus this month. The incoming freshman class represents an accomplished, diverse group of individuals who hail from 36 states, the District of Columbia and 35 countries around the world.

Thirty-five Kutztown University students will participate in community service next week as part of an Alternative Spring Break. Students will spend their week doing service projects in five communities on the east coast. Students will assist with construction of homes for Habitat for Humanity in Maryville, Va., New Bern, N.C., Marion, S.C., and Morgantown, W.Va. Students will also assist with environmental cleanup projects at Virginia State Park, Cape Charles, Va.

The following students from the Colgate University Class of 2016 have been inducted into the Colgate chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, the national scholastic honorary society that recognizes the outstanding academic achievement of first-year students. The approximately 167 students who received the prestigious distinction for having earned a grade point average of at least 3.5 during the 2011-2012 academic year were honored at a fall banquet.

Nearly 370 students graduated from Lebanon Valley College, Annville, Pa., Saturday, May 11. Commencement ceremonies, held in the LVC Gymnasium, included an address by Dr. Philip Benesch, associate professor of political science and winner of the 2012 Thomas Rhys Vickroy Award for teaching. Benesch encouraged graduates to take hold of the courage that is instilled by a liberal arts educationaEUR"courage in inquiry, courage in self-transformation, and political courage. "We should embolden [students] to question their teachers and to endeavor to contribute to a discipline that remains open to growth and open to innovation. This requires an intellectually courageous approach by the student for which a liberal-arts education...provides an ideal preparation... A liberal arts education must enhance the independent capacity of each student to situate him or herself in the world, transforming it while performing within it... Democracy necessitates the education of each citizen, so that he or she may play a part in checking the power of leaders and evaluating the multiple viewpoints available.
